Celebrating Earth Day with Two Game-Changing Reads: “Cradle to Cradle” and “The Upcycle”

As Earth Day approaches, I’d like to share my thoughts on two groundbreaking books that have significantly influenced the way we think about sustainability, design, and our relationship with the planet: “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things” by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, and its follow-up, “The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance.”

Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things” (2002)

In “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things” (2002), authors McDonough and Braungart, advocate for a “cradle to cradle” design philosophy that emphasizes the idea of designing with a “cradle to cradle” approach, meaning they should be created with the intention of being reused, repurposed, or safely returned to the environment at the end of their lifecycle. This contrasts with the traditional “cradle to grave” model, where products are designed to be discarded after use, contributing to waste and pollution.

The authors advocate for “eco-effectiveness” over “eco-efficiency.” Eco-efficiency focuses on reducing the negative environmental impacts of production and consumption, often by doing more with fewer resources. In contrast, eco-effectiveness emphasizes designing products and systems that have a positive environmental impact, creating abundance rather than merely minimizing harm.

The book also introduces the concept of Biological and Technical Nutrients: McDonough and Braungart propose that materials used in products should be classified as either biological nutrients or technical nutrients. Biological nutrients are materials that can be safely returned to the environment, while technical nutrients are materials that can be perpetually recycled within industrial processes without losing quality. By separating these two types of materials, products can be designed for easy disassembly and recycling, thereby reducing waste and pollution.

“The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance” (2013)

“The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance” (2013) builds upon the foundations laid in “Cradle to Cradle” and takes the concept even further. McDonough and Braungart introduce the idea of “upcycling,” which involves not just recycling materials but actively improving their quality and value over time.

Through the examples in the book, the authors demonstrate that by identifying and stating values clearly at the beginning of a design process, it is possible to design systems that are not only sustainable but also regenerative, fostering a healthier and more equitable world for future generations.

My favorite example was the design of the research and development facility, “Sustainability Base” at NASA Ames, a building designed to maximize daylight and fresh air and furnished with materials that are beneficial to your health. A building designed with smart systems so it knows exactly how much energy is consumed – and adapts itself based on weather, season and work patterns. 


While the ideas may still seem more aspirational than practical, as we celebrate Earth Day, I highly recommend “Cradle to Cradle” and “The Upcycle” for anyone interested in understanding how innovative design principles can drive positive change for both the planet and society.
